The Muses Read: Shameless by Nina Lemay

The Muses Read: Shameless by Nina Lemay

We’re all aware Muse KJ has a fondness for books who talk about the taboo, yes? It’s so easy to pretend that life doesn’t get tricky, and bad stuff doesn’t happen, and people don’t do things that are against the grain. News Flash: Life gets tricky. Sometimes bad things happen to people. People go against the grain – often. Which is exactly what I love about this book. Pink hair. Exotic dancer. Tough as nails heroine. And while this book isn’t technically banned… I think #BannedBookWeek is the perfect time to talk about it.  Don’t you agree? Shameless by Nina Lemay Release Date: August 18th 2014 Blurb: ~New Adult Contemporary Romance — recommended for mature readers~ Girls like me don’t get happy endings. I know what I am. At worst a cliché, at best a cautionary tale. I put an international border between me and my past, only to wind up working in a low-end titty bar. Even my excuse is as lame as it gets: I’m paying for college, getting my art degree from Montreal’s most prestigious school. Although some days it becomes confusing: am I just a student who moonlights as a stripper, or a stripper who masquerades as a student? But the inevitable happens and my two lives collide. And now there’s one other person who knows both the quiet, antisocial Hannah and the sensual, shameless Alicia. One person who keeps my secret. He’s beautiful, he’s sophisticated. He comes from the other side of life, the one where I’m not wanted or accepted. But he calls me la petite Américaine, and his hot, hot hands on my skin promise me things I long ago gave up on. The problem? He teaches my Classic Photography class. This is a standalone novel, no series, no cliffhanger. Find it at:  Amazon Muse Kristen’s Thoughts Let’s just get this out of the way – it’s been a long time since I’ve read a New Adult novel that impressed me like this one. By day, Hannah is a shy art student – unsure what she wants in life, simply running from her past. By night, she becomes Alicia – the confident girl who can make you fall in love with her with a spin around a pole, and a shake of a hip. But what happens when the two collide? Because all it takes is one wrong customer…and her worlds will collide. All it takes is for last night’s customer to become today’s professor. I found the characters to be intriguing. Emmanuel is more complex than the average man – but sweet, instead of the broken hero we often see.  Hannah’s voice is realistic, a tinge bitter, and hilarious. He’s the freaking knight in a white Audi. She’s strong, she’s tough – but she’s certainly not flawless. She uses her sharp tongue to keep everyone – especially men – far away from her.  She’s running away from affection before anyone gets close to her. What happens when she meets someone who she’s not sure she wants to run from? Can she move past the scars of her past to become vulnerable before life – and their forbidden romance – get in the way? And, like a weak little girl who can’t resist the piece of candy with the razor hidden inside, I reach for him. I don’t agree with all of Hannah’s actions – but it’s explained why she behaves that way. Her character growth is what impressed me the most – there’s so many ways her story could end, with her character becoming different things – but this ending is the only...

How To Date a Rock Star (And Get Away With It) by Ashley Poston

How To Date a Rock Star (And Get Away With It) by Ashley Poston

HOW TO DATE A ROCK STAR (AND GET AWAY WITH IT) IN TEN EASY STEPS When you’re in love, you do some pretty crazy things. And when you’re in love with a rockstar? Nothing is ever easy. So I will impart to you the wisdom I have collected, so when you meet a suspender-wearing, orange-headed rockstar at the beach, you’ll know exactly how to handle that hipster hottie. 1. Do not buy underwear with anyone’s face on them. (Even if it’s sexy Mc-Sexy-Sex Bruno Mars, don’t do it. Restrain yourself. Go for the granny panties instead.) 2. Kill his ego with fire. (Unless, of course, he’s already hit rock bottom. Then just let him buy you an ice cream and enjoy the free food. Ice cream doth not serious commitment maketh… but it can lead to a second date.) 3. Your best friend is wise, young padawan. (Seriously, your best friend is obsessed with this guy. She knows everything about him down to his pinky toe that sort of overlaps his fourth toe and the toe is kind of weird but kind of cute, too—but obviously more weird than cute.) 4. Don’t hesitate to get physical. (Especially when the paparazzi attack. And they will attack in droves. The rockstar you’re dating is like the Waldo of pop culture. If the paparazzi decide to ruin date night, ruin them right in the sweet spot.) 5. Don’t judge his best friend by his kilt. (In fact, make friends with the mohawk-stylin’ guy in the kilt. He’ll be your greatest ally. True story, brohaho.) 6. Your parents can and will ground you. They will also chase the paparazzi harassing you off their lawn. (Use this power wisely. You still live under their roof. Their word is law. And for the love of God, don’t step on the daisies!) 7. Try to be inconspicuous. (Nothing says ROCKSTAR’S GIRLFRIEND quite like pink hair.) 8. If Plan A fails, always have a Plan B. (This goes for pretty much everything in your life, but if you find yourself in a pickle and there are paparazzi breathing down your neck, Plan B will be your saving grace. It might also land you in jail.) 9. Break things. (Rules, hearts, guitars, someone’s face—use your imagination!) 10. You Are Enough. (Even when people tell you you aren’t, even when the rag mags wonder why a guy like him is with a girl like you—You. Are. Enough. You are more than enough. You are everything, and anything, and all things combined. He is with you because you are enough. Because you are plenty. Because you are everything he needs. But even without him, You Are Enough.) Now go forth, my fellow rockoholics! Be wild, be free, be exceptionally skilled at singing along to your favorite songs! And hopefully, with just a little luck, you can hook a hipster hottie, too. Just remember that with great power comes great responsibility, and sometimes the greatest of romances fall from the greatest of heights. THE SOUND OF US by Ashley Poston America’s favorite pop band, Roman Holiday, is done, dead, and so totally last year. For eighteen-year-old rockoholic Junie Baltimore, this is music to her ears. But when she discovers their sexy ex-lead singer hiding out on the boardwalk, her summer vacation becomes the cover story of the year. She’s willing to keep him a secret, but when a sleazy paparazzo offers her the cash she needs to save the bar her father left behind, could she sell out for the chance to save her future? Who is she kidding? That’s a no-brainer…but she never planned on falling head over heels for the lead singer. ASHLEY POSTON’s debut novel, THE SOUND OF US, is a quirky...

The Muses Read: Prophecy of the Most Beautiful by Diantha Jones

The Muses Read: Prophecy of the Most Beautiful by Diantha Jones

Greek mythology. It’s kinda my thing. In fact, I know more about Greek mythology than the average reader would – which always makes me simultaneously excited to read takes on the old myths, and incredibly nervous to. You know what’s also my thing? Gorgeous covers. They’re basically the tall, dark, and handsome of KJland. Cannot refuse them.   Prophecy of the Most Beautiful by Diantha Jones Blurb: She has a destiny so great that even the gods fear her. Constant hallucinations and the frequent conversations with the voices in her head, have earned eighteen-year-old Chloe Clever the not-so-coveted title of “Whack Job” in her home town of Adel, Georgia. Fed up with prescription meds and therapists, she wishes for a life where she is destined to be more than the butt of everyone’s jokes and mockery. Be careful what you wish for has never rung more true. After a vicious attack and learning that her favorite rockstar is an Olympian god, she is thrust into her new life as the Oracle of Delphi, the prophesier of the future. Setting out to fulfill the prophecy she has been given, Chloe learns of how great she is to become, all the while fighting mythical monsters and trying to outwit the ever-cunning Greek gods who harbor secrets of their own. While on a mission to discover the Most Beautiful, she strives to uncover the mysteries of the demigod Prince who has sworn to protect her with his life…and threatens to win her heart in the process. Find it at: Amazon | Barnes and Noble Muse KJ’s Thoughts Prophecy of the Most Beautiful was an easy read for me. Light, easy – exactly what one wants in the summer. Chloe already knows she’s different than most other girls. She just doesn’t know how. She thought maybe she was losing her mind…when really fate had so much more in store for her. The book starts with action – and doesn’t leave you wanting. You’re swept into adventure quickly, traveling along with Chloe from each confusing (to her) new twist and turn, meeting characters from the old myths…who have often adapted to the modern times in interesting ways. The characters are creative and entertaining. How would a god or demigod act if they were trying to be a part of today’s society? You just might get that answered. It’s pretty obvious immediately who the Swooner McSwoonster is. And that’s okay, especially because he’s Irish. WE MAKE EXCEPTIONS FOR THE ACCENTS, OKAY? I did wish Chloe was a little younger – I felt as if her personality would have been better matched if she was maybe sixteen, than an eighteen year old about to graduate high school. Did I solve the prophecy? Errr..no. Not even with all my mythology background. Do I want to know what happens next? Yes. Do I want to go hang out with Dio? Maybe. Probably. Yes. Don’t tell my mother. All that said, diehard mythology buffs may have issues with some of the creative licensing taken with a few of the deities. It all makes sense with the plot – but deities have been modernized, and in some cases their stories are altered to fit the story. I will note that I read an early ARC so I can’t comment on editing and formatting of the final novel.
