KICKSTARTER ALERT: Adventures of the Dress

I love to celebrate amazing books so I wanted to tell you about The Adventures of the Dress by Cara Vescio (you probably recognize her because she was one of Pen & Muse’s Map To Self-Publishing Authors). She’s embarked on the most incredible journey to celebrate women all through adventures while wearing the SAME dress. I think I’ve mentioned this before but, I love The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. It’s one of the coolest books (and movies) ever. The idea of being bonded to fellow women and empowered through a simple piece of clothing is so interesting to me. I think all too often, as women, we’re pressured to look a certain way or act a certain way. But what I loved about The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (besides Costas) was that the jeans embraced each girl no matter who she was, what she looked like, or where in the world she was located. I wished that this could be real.   And then it kind of did become real thanks to fabulous author Cara Vescio. And what’s even cooler…YOU can be a part of the story.     I met Cara through Twitter. She’s a writer, I’m a writer, and we just clicked.   We talked more and more via Twitter and at some point she wrote and had her book series (Elegantly Wasted, Uncontrollably Wasted, etc.) was picked up and published. It’s a new adult series about a kick-ass assassin who is dripping in sarcasm.  Seriously, she’s one of the best female main characters I’ve ever read. But I digress.   Our friendship progressed to the point where I met her in person! She was featured in the Las Vegas Book Festival so I drove out from California and helped man her book table. It was a blast. Then she came to California to visit. And again last year, when ALA came to her state, I drove out to Vegas and we hung out together. If you don’t know her…Let me tell you about Cara.   She’s just as kick-ass as her females in her books. She’s smart. Talented. Hilarious. A creative genius. And like Frankie (from the Wasted series) dripping with sarcasm that only makes you love her more. Cara believes in writing and she believes in women, and that’s why when she told me about her new project, I couldn’t help but squeal in delight!     What is The Adventures of the Dress? I’ll let Cara tell you.   Why do I think this project kicks ass? Because it showcases ALL WOMEN, in all sizes, shapes, locations, ages, and celebrates their diversity, their uniqueness, and their strength as women. Actually, some of my favorite author-ly women are in it too, like Rebekah Crane and New York Times best-selling author Jessica Park!     How can you be a part of it? It’s simple! Help fund her Kickstarter! And get a kick-ass book too along with it (and some cool swag). Fund Adventures of the Dress!   What if you can not afford it? Like any book, if you love the idea and can’t afford it, spread the word! Tell everyone about it! Because if you love an author or a book, you should share...

Waiting on Wednesday: Charlie, Presumed Dead by Anne Heltzel

I’m always on the lookout for new, interesting reads. Just last year I read a book that I fell absolutely in love with called Forget Me by K.A. Harrington. After I read it I had a complete book hangover because 1) It was phenomenal and 2) There really wasn’t another book out like it. So imagine my glee when I came across a fantastic list of young adult books out in 2015. It was there that I discovered Charlie, Presumed Dead by Anne Heltzel.   In Paris, family and friends gather to mourn the tragic passing of Charlie Price—young, handsome, charming, a world-traveler—who is presumed dead after an explosion. Authorities find only a bloodied jacket, ID’d as Charlie’s. At the funeral, two teens who are perfect strangers, Lena Whitney and Aubrey Boroughs, make another shocking discovery: they have both been dating Charlie, both think Charlie loved them and them alone, and there is a lot they didn’t know about their boyfriend. Over the next week, a mind-bending trip unfolds: first in London—then in Mumbai, Kerala, and Bangkok, the girls go in search of Charlie. Is he still alive? What did their love for him even mean? The truth is out there, but soon it becomes clear that the girls are harboring secrets of their own. No one knows whom to trust in this thrilling tale of suspense and deception.   Add this to your Goodreads About Anne Heltzel Anne Heltzel was born in Warren, Ohio. A Notre Dame graduate, she moved to NYC in 2006 to pursue an MFA in Creative Writing from the New School. In New York, she found lots of like-minded, creative types. It was home. It was a natural transition, then, to her first job in book publishing and later to a division of Penguin Group, where she was a fiction editor until September, 2012 (with a short sabbatical in 2009). Anne lived in India from September 2009-December 2010. She hopes to return as soon and as often as possible. In Bombay she acquired her dog, Mochi, who came back with her to Brooklyn. His name means “cobbler” in Hindi, but it also refers to a gelatinous type of Japanese rice cake, generally filled with ice cream. Anne now lives and writes in Paris. Okay, I’ve never read anything from Anne Heltzel but this sounds F-ING AMAZING. Like, the moment I discovered this book I grabbed my laptop and locked myself in my room so that I could blog about it. No joke. What do you think? Will you be reading it? Does anyone want to help me break into Houghton Mifflin Harcourt so that we can read this before June 2015?...

Waiting on Wednesday: Party Games by R.L. Stine

Those of you who know me, know that I’m a HUGE R.L. Stine fan. I’ve read all of his books. I love horror. And I even write some of my own. Imagine my excitement when I received the most glorious thing in the mail this weekend… an ARC of Party Games by R.L. Stine!   As you can imagine, when I first spotted it, it was love at first sight (I’m sure it was mutual…)   And then, well, things between us got pretty hot and heavy, pretty quickly.   Though my initial instinct was to call out sick until I’d read through it 13 times, I suppose that I will have to read on my spare time. Le sigh. But seriously, how exciting is this?! About Party Games Her friends warn her not to go to Brendan Fear’s birthday party at his family’s estate on mysterious Fear Island. But Rachel Martin has a crush on Brendan and is excited to be invited. Brendan has a lot of party games planned. But one game no one planned intrudes on his party—the game of murder. As the guests start dying one by one, Rachel realizes to her horror that she and the other teenagers are trapped on the tiny island with someone who may want to kill them all. How to escape this deadly game? Rachel doesn’t know whom she can trust. She should have realized that nothing is as it seems… on Fear Island.R.L. Waiting on Wednesday: Wasteland by C. Elizabeth Vescio

I love the Wasted series by C. Elizabeth Vescio. So imagine my delight when she told me she was releasing a compilation book of beginnings. Finally, readers can see a glimpse into the past of the best, brightest, and most dangerous of Osiris agents. I loved the book series so much that I was even able to help pick the tagline of Wasteland, which is, “Survival Not Guaranteed.” It’s perfect! Wasteland follows the release of Elegantly Wasted (book #1) and Uncontrollably Wasted (book #2). Check out Wasteland!   About Wasteland A collection of short stories from the minds of Osiris’ finest lunatics. A mysterious assassin, a manic doctor, a Catholic School girl, a sly con-woman, a confused kid, a driven socialite… you may be surprised how some of these proficient killers started out in the world of Osiris. Which is why I need Remember Me (book #2 of the Find Me series) by Romily Bernard to come out now! Waiting On Wednesday: Don’t Look Back by Jennifer L. Armentrout

I’m guilty of liking almost everything that Jennifer L. Armentrout writes. I think she’s a fantastic writer. I loved the Lux series. So imagine my surprise and glee when I discovered that she had a new book coming out, called Don’t Look Back. It sounds terrific and haunting. The cover looks terrific and the synopsis sounds awesome. Take a peek.     About Don’t Look Back Samantha is a stranger in her own life. Until the night she disappeared with her best friend, Cassie, everyone said Sam had it all-popularity, wealth, and a dream boyfriend. Sam has resurfaced, but she has no recollection of who she was or what happened to her that night. As she tries to piece together her life from before, she realizes it’s one she no longer wants any part of. The old Sam took “mean girl” to a whole new level, and it’s clear she and Cassie were more like best enemies. Sam is pretty sure that losing her memories is like winning the lottery. She’s getting a second chance at being a better daughter, sister, and friend, and she’s falling hard for Carson Ortiz, a boy who has always looked out for her-even if the old Sam treated him like trash. But Cassie is still missing, and the facts about what happened to her that night isn’t just buried deep inside of Sam’s memory-someone else knows, someone who wants to make sure Sam stays quiet. All Sam wants is the truth, and if she can unlock her clouded memories of that fateful night, she can finally move on. But what if not remembering is the only thing keeping Sam alive? Publish Date: 4/15/14 Doesn’t it sound awesome? I know that I can’t wait to read it. Don’t forget to add it to your Goodreads! And shout out to Jill from Breaking the Spine for hosting this weekly book event! What do you guys think? What is your Waiting on Wednesday book? Let me know in the comments...
